Fellow Toastmasters, I have a question for you. Are you a member or do you just belong? Now I know some of you are sitting there thinking, why on Earth would she ask that? But think about it. I’ll wait.
What do I mean by “Are you a member or do you just belong?” Do you go to meeting regularly? Okay, so you said yes. Now my question is – when you go to meeting, do you actively participate?
When Toastmasters International rolled out the new branding, they said Toastmasters is “Where leaders are made.” Fellow Toastmasters, leaders are made by actively participating. You should always fill a role at meeting and be eager to present a speech whenever possible.
Fellow Toastmasters, if you aren’t being challenged both professionally and personally by being a member of Toastmasters, I strongly encourage you to speak to your mentor, one of your officers, or any member for that matter to see what you can do to become the leader and communicator you want to be.
Leaders are made by actively engaging potential new members. Are you telling people about Toastmasters? Are you telling them how Toastmasters has changed your life? I can guarantee, if being an actively involved member in Toastmasters hasn’t changed your life, then you aren’t as actively involved as you could be.
As Toastmasters, we understand the opportunity we have given ourselves and fulfilled the opportunity with experiences that have made us better people. I urge you to make contact with just one potential new member each week to show them “Where Leaders are Made.”
